March 19th, 2006

Canada has joined the Bush march to war overseas. Last Spring, the former Liberal government quietly restructured the Canadian Forces. Those structural changes are now manifesting in Afghanistan. No longer the ?peacekeepers? we once were, Canada?s foreign policy today bears a striking resemblance to that of our ?muscular? neighbour. But, it?s not just the military undergoing change: Canada itself is being transformed into a subsidiary State of Greater America.

John Ryan is a retired professor of geography and senior scholar at the University of Winnipeg who argues, the so-called ?Deep Integration? program currently championed by both the ruling Tories and leading elements of the Liberal party means an end to Canada as we know it.

And; everyone complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it. Or, so the old joke goes. But in the United States, someone is trying to do something about it, and the proposed attempt is a growing controversy.

Rosalind Petersen is with California Skywatch, an organization dedicated to those who want to breathe clean air, protect our drinking water, soil, trees, public health, and the natural environment in which we live.

Rosalind Petersen and a change in the weather in the second half.

And; Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with all that?s good to do in and around Victoria this week.

But first, John Ryan and Canada?s role in Empire.
