Blind-Eyed on Climate Change: Conservatives Plan to Kill Energy Saving Program

BCSEA
- Naomi Devine - The BCSEA Victoria Chapter Steering Committee supports the Energuide program, which was one of the exhibitors in our booth at the Victoria Spring Home and Garden Show. There was great interest in the program from visitors to our booth. With climate change clearly underway, and energy demand increasing, this program is a very effective 'Made in Canada' program to mitigate both urgent problems. It is based on measurements of energy use and assists homeowners with actual reductions.

Canada: Killing Kyoto, Burying the Bad News

PEJ News -
C. L. Cook - Back in the saddle! Having made of the last week a media holiday, (a blessed relief I highly recommend) it's time to grasp again the cudgel where I left off. Last week, commencement week for Canada's new "transparent" government, Stephen Harper's Tories quietly axed the country's Kyoto Protocol commitments on global climate change, and as an ominous extra measure, muzzled the public release of a novel detailing the possible effects of climate change on Canada written by an employee of Environment Canada.

Time to Debunk Mulroney as an Environmentally Enlightened Canadian Prime Minister

PEJ News - Joan Russow - Some environmentalists have claimed that the Mulroney Conservative government (in power 1985-1993) demonstrated environmental enlightenment. It is time the myth about Mulroney' s environmental enlightenment was dispelled not perpetuated.

Mulroney demonstrated environmental rhetoric but with questionable consequences and follow-up actions.

Ditching Kyoto: Environment Minister's Clear Disregard for Canada's Commitments

PEJ News - Joan Russow - Canada will be taking on the presidency in the upcoming meeting of the parties of the Kyoto protocol of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. On April 7 in question period Rona Ambrose, minister of the environment stated in parliament the position that the minority government would take at the May 15 meeting of the parties on Climate Change. Taking a position without consultion clearly contravenes the commitment that the Conservatives made in the speech from the throne. In the speech from the throne the Conservatives made a commitment to consult with parliament prior to crafting a position that Canada would be taking internationally.

Xeni Gwet'in Rights and Title and Wild Horses at Risk

    Friends of the Nemaiah Valley
    - David Williams - A recent B.C. Court of Appeal decision handed down a judgment that severely curtailed financial assistance for the Xeni Gwet'in First Nation and Chief Roger William in their case for rights and title in the Supreme Court of B.C. Following this decision, Ian Mulgrew of the Vancouver Sun published a story about the court costs that condemned the expense of the trial. He did not contact Chief Roger or any of his legal team to check facts before writing the article. He did not investigate and compare the amounts spent on Chief Roger's case with the amounts that have been spent by the Crown fighting it. He did not compare the cost of the trial with the cost of the Treaty Process, which is approximately 100 times more expensive, yet going nowhere.

Nuking Ontario: Public "Consultations" to Begin on Expanded Nuclear Production

PEJ News - C. L. Cook - While half a world away Iran faces the wrath of America and her allies over its nuclear program, Ontarians are to be granted a scant four days of "public consultation" on the province's plan to expand nuclear power production on the shores of Lake Ontario.

Less than Green: What Does the Green Party Stand For?

    The Tyee
    - Murray Dobbin - Many people vote Green because they assume it is more grassroots, more democratic, than the others. They would be shocked to know that the party is the most top-down of any of the federal parties, and that Harris seems to simply ignore decisions that he doesn't agree with.
