Prisoner in Our Midst: Extraditing Canadian Justice

PEJ News - C. L. Cook -  For those not aware of the case of Tre Arrow, he is now a prisoner of the Wilkinson Road Jail, Victoria, British Columbia, awaiting extradition to the United States. The high-profile, Oregon environmentalist is charged with "Terrorism," and faces a grim future if Canada folds again to the whims and wiles of American Justice.

Slaughterhouse on Strike PDF Print E-mail

PEJ News - Julie Muir, Animal Rights Editor: Workers are on strike at Lakeside Packers, a meatpacking plant in Brooks Alberta, after year-long negotiations to implement a contract with the union have broken down.  Owned by the American company Tyson Foods, the plant processes about a third of Canada's beef and has been without a union for over 20 years.  Apparently "Tyson Foods has operated Lakeside with some of the highest injury rates of any industrialized plant in North America" (UFCW.org).  As well,  several picketers and the union leader have been injured during the strike, perhaps proving that the slaughter house is bad news for humans as well as animals!

Freezing Assets: Unprecedented Strike at Labour

PEJ News - C. L. Cook - If there were any doubt Premier Gordon Campbell is merely a front for a broader agenda to eliminate the public sector, today's move by the B.C. Supreme Court to forego a fine against the recently criminalized B.C. Teachers Federation, or to lock up one or more of the union's executive, seals it; Madam Justice Brenda Brown broke new legal ground (at time of writing, lawyers across the country are dusting their books over this one) deciding instead to freeze the union's assets wholesale.

Help Stop Deportations of Falun Gong Practitioners

PEJ News - Falun Gong practitioners in Canada ask your help in urging the Canadian government to stop deporting Falun Gong practitioners to China, where they face certain persecution. There is a sample letter at the end for your reference.

Following the recent forcible deportation of practitioner Ms. Xiaoping Hu, despite an outpouring of appeals by Members of Parliament and thousands of Canadians, our government has recently ordered the removal of two more practitioners, Mr. Yaobin Fang and his wife Mrs. Fengying Xiong.

CBC Settlement

Public Airwaves: This is a quick note to help spread the good news:  A few hours ago the CBC and the Canadian Media Guild signed a memorandum of agreement to end the CBC lockout. As I write this in the early hours of the morning, details of the settlement are still sketchy.  They can be found on our main website here:
