Legal Aspects of Canada?s Actions in Afghanistan Deeply Troubling: Canadian Forces Violate UN Mandate and International Law

John McNamer - After being appointed Canada?s Chief of the Defence Staff last year, Gen. Rick Hillier bluntly enunciated his vision of the shaping of Canada?s startling new military ideology: The military?s job is to be able to ?kill people,? he said, and those responsible for terrorism in Afghanistan and elsewhere are ?detestable murderers and scumbags.?

- C. L. Cook - [from the way back file] Canada's pretence to non-alignment, or at least nothing more than a loose affiliation, with Bush administration ambitions of global energy domination lost another veil with Bill Graham's announcement of a Canadian troop deployment to the oilfields of Darfur. -{lex}

Trident Fury Launched as Minister of Defence Talks of "Buying People"?

PEJ News - Joan Russow - This morning on the political Channel, the Hon Gordon O?Connor demonstrated that he has not left his lobbying vocabulary for military hardware behind. Gordon O?Connor was a registered lobbyist for the arms industry, and slipped into his position as Minister of Defence before the Accountability Act. On May 8 when he appeared before Senate Committee on Defence, he was asked about the need to replace the attrition of 5000 military personnel each year. He responded by stating: ? we need 2 million more to buy people? and then he reinforced his comment by stating that ?we will shuffle dollars so we can buy people?.

Completing the Cycle of Usefulness: Harper Doing his Master's Bidding

PEJ News - C. L. Cook - Newly forged Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper is peeved with the country's bleeding heart media reports to the people of their fallen fellow citizens overseas. Echoing his philosophical master in Washington, Harper demanded "No pictures, please!" of the sombre casket bearing processions certain to grow only more frequent. Indeed, so frequent are those processions expected to become, Canada's dead young will too pass unmarked by half-mast flags in the nation's capital. Mr. Harper sees no practical use for ceremonies of this nature.

Just Deserters: So You Want Out of the Killing Game?

PEJ News
- C. L. Cook - There's been much written in this country, Canada, about American soldiers seeking refuge from the carnage of the illegal wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sadly, the days of just shelter from the war-mongering madness ascendant and currently masquerading as democracy in the Land of the Free are done in Canada.

Top Ten Reasons Why Canada Needs a Debate About Afghanistan

PEJ News - M. Wallace - The Canadian mainstream media refuses any challenge to our role in Afghanistan, with almost no critical voices, despite polling that indicates at least half of Canadians not only question but oppose our deployment. Prime Minister Harper resues a Parliamentary debate over Afghanistan, and impugns the loyalty of critics. But as Plato said 2,500 years ago, only a tyrant refuses to debate the wisdom of a foreign war.
