The Religious Right in Chiapas

PEJ News - JossJosephMageau -
This is my very last road entry, for this year and possibly for the next. I am close to finishing up the South and Central America tour..2008 to 2009... and I am happier than hell to be going back home. I have not submitted any posts for a long while as the news from this part of the globe is pretty much like a stuck CD. Political incompetence and cases of corruption leading to demonstrations by angry and tired trabajadores, campesinos, and Indios (naturales) are part of everyday existence south of the Rio Bravo (Rio Grande). One can only report and translate on so much before one

Why on Earth would Obama want to meet with Harper?

2009 February 19

PEJ News- Joan Russow - Global Compliance Research Project - Harper was a Bush lackey who on most issues would appear to counter Obama’s call for charting a new course for America. In some issues, however, there is concurrence.

www.PEJ.org

Harper now leads a minority government that was only kept in place, by the Governor General who, through the process of proroging Parliament, enabled him to evade a non-confidence vote. Surely, Obama has been briefed on the fact that 62% of the Canadians did not vote for the current minority Conservative government.

What has Harper done that would endear him to Obama and to the vision Obama has been espousing?

Is Obama not concerned that he is dealing with a Prime Minister, who has done the following:

-when in Opposition supported the invasion of Iraq.

- when in Opposition, initially denied the anthropogenic causes of climate change, and when in government, has undermined, by refusing to adopt 1990 as a baseline, and by ignoring the Framework Convention of Climate change and its protocol, the resolve to seriously address the issue of climate change. .

- when in Government, refused, along with the Bush regime, and one other state, to adopt the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

- when in Government, refused to designate water as a fundamental human right

- when in Government, has disregarded the environmental consequences of the Tar Sands.

Is he meeting with Harper, because Harper’s minority government has been the strongest proponent of the continued occupation of Afghanistan? It would appear with the recent announcement by Obama, of a surge of 17,000 US troops in Afghanistan, that Obama values Harper’s willingness to increase military spending and to support the foreign occupation of Afghanistan. Also, Harper, and Obama, failed to take a strong stand against the disproportionate attack, by Israel, on Gaza.

Is he also meeting with Harper because Lawrence Summers is with the Obama entourage? When Summers was the former president of the World Bank, he wrote a memo, which was leaked, that it made good economic sense to transfer the dirty industries to the least developed states.

While Obama advocates developing alternative energy and deplores the dirty oil process in the tar sands, perhaps, because of the current economic crisis, the call for clean energy will be trumped by economic concerns and Canadian dirty oil will continue to flow south.

Either Obama is deluding the public by stating that the change we need cannot be done unless we abandon the way things were done before, or he is compelled, by current economic circumstances to put on hold, the call for “America to chart a new course”

If he were really serious about charting a new course for America, he would abandon militarism, and reallocate the over 1 trillion military budget to socially equitable and environmentally sound practices.

PEJ News - John Muthukat -
Economists, as a rule, focus on short-term conjectural fluctuations, often ignoring the medium-term, decades-long cycles, not to mention longer trends or 40- to 50-year long cycles. If one pays no attention to such things, it is not difficult

Reflections On A Troubled Continent: America del Sur

PEJ News -
JossJosephMageau - This time I come to you with simple reflections on the troubled lands of South America. I am currently on my seventh month of travel. After having passed very quickly through the Northern Bolivia and Chile I have found areas rich in natural splendor and culture. The culture wealth stems mainly from the indigenous presence and the natural beauty is greatest wherever indigenous people live. If you come here visit the Indians first.

From the Fringe of the Peruvian Amazon

PEJ News - JossJosephMageau -
In Peru, as in much of Latin America, a great populist revival, separate from the previous desperate attempts of the quintesential Latino and Latina revolutionary is making great progress with people who refuse to lie down for their exploiters. In the forefront are the true landlords, the Indigenous people of the lands wrongly named America by the Spanish tyrants. Or, in SoCal radical terms... serfs up...

Ecuador and Peru.. Impressiones del Viajero

PEJ News - JossJosephMageau -
Well back on the road. Sitting in a sweatbox Internet cafe..a small cubible in a small storespace next to a noisy street full of cars and tricycles honking their horns at every corner that does not have streetlights. The busy Piura Peru work day growls grumbles roars etc. The level of noise Latinos live with is incredible, no wonder these cities are so unorganized, they have no time to think.
