Urgently needed a suite, house, or duplex for rent, or a house sitting situation with a yard. I am a reliable working mature woman with a friendly samoyed dog. I can also offer to exchange my place in the Slocan Lake (Silverton) for a place in Victoria for a few months. I would prefer a furnished place, but I will also considered unfurnished. Just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't watching you!
You made a reference to do with something Orwellian in one of your newsletters(?), so when I came across this article I thought of you. Its a little long winded but you might find it interesting. And if you like, check out http://www.echelonwatch.org/

The Citizens Assembly recommends that it is time to do democracy differently. The process Fair Voting BC originally initiated, with our campaign to convince the government to appoint a Citizens Assembly, worked and it worked well. The proposed, 1,2,3,Voting system was chosen by the Assembly over our current system almost unanimously. The promise of less party control played a big role. There is an appetite to ensure MLAs pay more attention to their voters and less to their parties than is common today. The values the Assembly found desirable include: effective local representation, greater proportionality, less party discipline, accountable government and a less polarized politics. For details see: http://www.citizensassembly.bc.ca

I just picked this one from a flood of information to strengthen the fight
against outsourcing - we remember our B.C. government being "open for
business" regardless of any social back-lash.

The classic Halloween song "The Monster Mash" has gone political.

The hit's original singer, Bobby "Boris" Pickett, has re-recorded his
song for our latest Flash film, "The Monster Slash." Before we could
even send the movie out to you, the Washington Post and Billboard
magazine picked up the story and sent so many visitors our way that it
crashed our servers. But we beefed up our bandwidth so you can check it
out: http://www.monsterslash.org

National Missile Defence

Please take a half hour to write a letter to our MPs about missile defence. This week, the Liberal party will be debating the issue in the hope that the rebel female caucus can be brought back in line with their gung-ho missile defence male counterparts.

The Liberal party fears a split along gender lines if there is a vote in the Commons.

Your letters are important. Here is a current email list of all MPs. Just cut and paste into the bcc field so each MP will get a "personal" email.

3. MOVIE MONDAY

Monday Nov 1 6:30 WINGED MIGRATION

An amazing film that grew from an early MM discovery - Canadian Bill Lishman's realized dream to fly with geese. It inspired the film Fly Away Home and now crews are flying with and filming flocks all over the world. The result is a gorgeous mediation on the wonder and persistance of birds and their survival on our trouble planet, shot over the course of three years on all seven continents. G

A Jewish boy separated from his family in the early days of WWII poses as a German orphan in Russia and is taken into the heart of the Nazi world as a 'war hero' and eventually becomes a Hitler Youth. The protagonist becomes a kind of a Jewish "Little Big Man" illustrates a key period in world history as events place him dizzyingly on several sides of the strife. Remarkably adapted from a true memoire, this film won Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film and Oscar nomination for adapted screenplay, and is a fit for upcoming Remembrance Day

5. MOCK THE VOTE, 2004

14. SIMPLICITY AND SUCCESS WORKSHOP

I've teamed up with well-known Victoria Life Coach Julia Menard to offer a one-day version of a new Simplicity and Success workshop. It's a fun and exciting day about developing the skills and framework with which to create what matters most in your life, work, and relationships. As Kate Wolf might have said, it can help you "find something you really care about and live a life that shows it.

Simplicity and Success Workshop

Shows Individuals, Couples, and Groups
How to Create What Matters Most in Life, Work, and Relationships

Do you ever feel stuck? Unsure of your direction?
Do you have trouble integrating life and work? Or trouble with transitions?
Have you thought about simplifying your life but do not want to sacrifice success?

In the 2-day workshop which runs 9 to 5 on November 13, organizers say that participants will learn how to:

* Recognize the difference between solving problems and creating results,
* Craft clear and compelling visions of desired end results,
* Carefully assess current reality relative to your results,
* Set up and work with "Creative Tension,"
* Lay out and experiment with action steps,
* Learn from experience, adjust to change and build momentum, and
* Follow through to completion and sustain results.

The workshop fee is $125 ($99 for early birds who register before November 1). The fee includes a copy of Simplicity and Success, a 35-page workbook, and a bonus booklet about dealing with adversity! Participants will also be offered a specially priced package deal that bundles the workshop with follow-up phone coaching or participation in a local study group. Space is limited to 30 participants, so participants are urged to sign up early.

CCR CONSULTATIONS

CCR consultations address issues of refugee protection and immigrant and refugee settlement. They are held twice a year and bring together 300 or more people from across Canada and beyond. Participants include refugees, immigrants,
representatives of NGOs, government, UNHCR, academics and international guests. The consultations offer a key opportunity for information-exchange, networking, strategy development and consultation. People who work with newcomers and those with a personal interest in refugees and immigrants are warmly invited.

The consultation is an excellent opportunity to:

* meet and learn from experts in the field
* exchange information and prepare resolutions on a broad range of refugee and newcomer issues
* contribute to the CCR working groups' ongoing dialogue on policy and legislation.

MENTORING

Since participating in a CCR consultation for the first time can be a confusing experience, the CCR offers a mentor program. People who are new to CCR consultations can ask to be paired with a person more experienced in the ways of the CCR who will assist the newcomer to understand CCR processes.

REFUGEE PARTICIPATION

The CCR is committed to promoting refugee participation. Refugees without an organization that could pay their registration fee can register free of charge (deadline Friday 12 November.) The CCR welcomes assistance in promoting the
consultation among refugee communities.

16. CONTINUUM MOVEMENT - VICTORIA

with Doris Maranda, MA

Saturday/Sunday, November 20/21,
12noon to 6 p.m.
Centre for Energy Medicine, 917 Mason Street

(off Quadra, one block north of Johnston)

Investment: $165 ($25 non-refundable deposit); early bird: $135 by Nov. 2

Continuum is a subtle, gentle and richly detailed movement practice. It provides both a philosophy and a toolkit of methods with which we can interact with our cells, fluids, bones, tissue and breath. Its many benefits include a sense of well-being, increased sensitivity and empathy, and relief from stress. By focusing on mobility and flexible strength, it counteracts the effects of aging, disease and neuro-muscular compromise. Doris Maranda is an authorized Continuum Movement teacher. Since 1989, she has been studying and training with Emilie Conrad, founder of Continuum, and Susan Harper of Continuum Montage. Doris is a registered clinical counsellor and a Somatic Experiencing teacher with a private practice in Vancouver.

?During this weekend workshop, we will use sensory awareness, breath, sound and subtle and dynamic movement to enlarge our capacity to live from the inside out: to move, speak, think, love, play and work as liquid organisms in a friendly world.? To Doris, this work is a spiritual practice as well as a practical means by which she has dealt with post-polio syndrome and chronic fatigue.

17. PACIFIC NORTHWEST LABOUR HISTORY ASSOCIATION

I invite you to join the Pacific Northwest Labour History Association (PNLHA). Our members include trade unionists, students, academics, and others in BC, Oregon and Washington who believe the labour movement must know where it's been to know where it's going. We depend exclusively on memberships and donations to promote workers' heritage in our region. A membership application form is attached.

Activities in our successful 2004 year included our annual conference, held in Eugene, Oregon. Plans are now underway for our 37th annual conference which will be held in Vancouver from June 10 - 12, 2005 at SFU Harbour Centre. The theme is the 100th anniversary of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

We also publish an annual labour history calendar. The theme of the 2005 calendar is the centennial of the IWW. It contains four photographs from BC as well as photographs from Washington and Oregon states. The calendar makes a great Christmas present for friends in the labour movement. More information about the calendar and an order form are attached.

Visit our website: http://www.pnlha.org.

21. NOT-FOR-PROFIT RADIO ON CFUV

Not-for-Profit Radio is a new public affairs program airing every Friday morning at 8 AM on CFUV 101.9 FM radio. I have been interviewing people from different small non-profit groups in the Victoria area about their purposes, goals, intitiatives and activities, featuring a different group on each week's program.

Beginning in 2005, I would like to
1) contact and interview people from more groups
2) include a brief calendar of non-profit-sponsored activities in each week's program
3) devote at least one program a month to issues and topics of general interest to the non-profit community (e.g. fundraising, building alliances, staffing and volunteers)

If you are from a local non profit group or know a group which should be profiled, if you would like to "post" something to a program calendar or if you have particular issues or themes you would like to see addressed by this show, please contact me via e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Thanks very much,
