Over the weekend, over 20,000 people protested at Ft. Benning, the home of
the School of the Americas.  Anyone who thinks torture is a "new" US policy
is misinformed.

1.  Defend the Dominion! - Nov 23rd

Following a tenants meeting with some of the remaining tenants of the Dominion Hotel a rally and demonstration is planned to defend the Dominion Hotel:

Friday, November 23rd
11:00am
210 Abbott St

**food and hot drinks will be served**

On October 31st tenants of the Dominion Hotel were issued 2-month eviction notices, siting the landlord had the proper permits for renovations and repairs. In fact the landlord DID NOT have the proper permits and evictions were illegal.

In early december advocates will be challenging the eviction notices at the Residential Tenancy Branch. However, a community response is being organized to support the tenants and to pressure the landlord around the closure of this hotel.

The landlord is planning to make basic, aesthetic repairs to the building and then double or triple the rent to make a profit. This will add 25 more units of low-income housing lost in the Downtown Eastside.

Please join us on Friday, to support the tenants of the Dominion and to stop the conversion of the Dominion Hotel.

2.  100 Mile Diet Authors - Nov 23rd

James MacKinnon and Alisa Smith, the authors of "The 100-Mile Diet,"
will be speaking about their book

at the UBC Chan Centre Concert Hall
on November 23rd at 12 noon.

The book is a bestseller and buzz worthy book that uses a social experiment (can we subsist on only eating things produced within a 100 mile radius?) to look into the world of food politics, economics, and culture. Extra bonus is that James and Alisa also happen to be Vancouverites, so their story has this wonderful local angle to it. Furthermore, we've done our homework here, and know that they are excellent speakers by all accounts.

This will include a Q&A period, as well as an opportunity to meet the authors afterwards.

Tickets are free
