1.  Movie Monday - July 2nd, 9th

>Monday 6:30 July 2 CANADA DAY     The JOURNALS of KNUD RASMUSSEN

By the makers of ATANARJUAT: The Fast Runner - Zacharias Kunuk & Norman Cohn
A portrayal of the lives of the last great Inuit shaman, Avva, and his beautiful and headstrong daughter, Apak. Based on the journals of 1920s Danish ethnographer Knud Rasmussen.
"This cerebral, beautiful narrative, presented in an unusual and disturbing documentary style, takes us back in time to witness the repudiation of spirit helpers and the old way - -  Raymond Massey      112min  R   www.isuma.ca/thejournals/

Movie Monday is a weekly program of film screenings (on Monday evenings), by donation, at a 100 seat auditorium in Victoria's psychiatric hospital, the Eric Martin Pavilion. We show an eclectic range of titles, from Hollywood to indie with and accent on recovery stories of all kinds, especially mental illness and addiction. Often we have discussions including filmmakers and local people involved in the films' subjects.

Movie Monday is an accessible, interactive venue for people who are socially and financially challenged and for the general public - anyone who wants to enjoy a well chosen film in welcoming surroundings.  Refreshments at very reasonable prices.

More info on films, background, location at www.moviemonday.ca or call the info line 595-FLIC.

>Monday 6:30 July 9 FACING THE DEMONS with guest - by phone from Australia - Terry O'Connell
FACING THE DEMONS documents the effort to create an extraordinary event - a "conference" between those responsible for a terrible murder, and the family and friends of the victim.
Restorative justice is gaining attention as a method of healing and reconciliation. Conferences such as the one documented in this film can help criminals confront the enormity of their actions, perhaps preventing them from relapsing on the outside. For victims and their families, it can be a way of helping to end the ordeal. Capturing on film the emotionally charged confrontation between a murderer and his victim's family, FACING THE DEMONS takes us through the entire process to bring about such communication.

"Powerful and deeply moving... A very vivid rendering of the complexities and pain flowing out a real crime when put through the lens of a restorative justice effort."
Our guest is a world leader in the restorative justice practice. He says,
"I was attracted by the idea that you show films at your local psych hospital
and given the nature of the film 'Facing The Demons', there could be some
very interesting and challenging issues arise in our conversation.

Bear in mind that I have [over the last 17 years] facilitated restorative
conferences for a range of serious crimes and incidents - many involving
death, suicide, sexual abuse, rape and so on. Many of those folk who
participate have had a long history of involvement with counsellors,
psychologists and psychiatrists. Apart from being a cop for nearly 30 years,
I also graduated with a social welfare degree in the late 1980's [majoring
in psychology]. My experience reveals there is a lot of questionable
practice happening that I think frankly offers very little."

7.  Make history on July 7th

On July 7, more than 2 billion people will join together to watch the Live Earth concerts and demonstrate to our leaders that the time has come to solve the climate crisis.

Wherever you are that day, you can be part of the action. At events around the world, we are going to convert the potential energy of Live Earth into a global campaign. In thousands of homes, people will invite their friends and neighbors to watch the concerts and join the movement.

In order to make these parties truly global, I've decided to partner with Avaaz. The 385,000 Avaaz members from every corner of the world, who mobilized to pressure the G8, amazed me. Avaaz's work to give ordinary people around the world a powerful voice in global decision-making is inspiring, and your organizing around the G8 Summit made a significant difference. Now we have the opportunity to expand on that great effort.

Will you commit to organize a Live Earth house party on July 7th? The parties will be fun--and they'll make a difference. If you've got a few friends and a TV, you've got everything you need.

http://www.avaaz.org/en/live_earth/lf.php

7.7.07 will be the one opportunity we have to bring millions of new people into our campaign. We cannot let it slip by.

If you host a Live Earth Party, you'll have access to a special video I've made to urge people to take action. Together, I know we can convince everyone attending these parties to get involved. In a few short hours, you and your friends can watch the concert, take action -- and, at the end, upload a photo from your event that will be accessible to others taking part throughout the world. Through these parties, we can reach more people than ever before and build a truly global movement to solve the climate crisis.

Holding a Live Earth party is easy. All you need is a television and a few friends. We will provide you with all the tools you need.

Sign up as a party host by visiting:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/live_earth/lf.php

Live Earth will be a unique moment when the uninterrupted and undivided attention of the world will be focused on the climate crisis. I need your help to make it count.

Thank you,

Al Gore
