PEJ News
Jan. 14, 2007

One may be tempted to think: After nearly four years of the bloody debacle in Iraq, and more than five of efforts amounting to nought in Afghanistan, the U. S. administration, as it is under George W. Bush, would be tiring of war and ready to tone down its diplomatic bellicosity; but thinking has not proven the hallmark of either the current American president or the determined actors behind him. Instead, as the new year begins, Bush has announced reinforcements for Iraq, deployment of another carrier group to the Persian Gulf, and within hours of his January 10th address to the nation, authorized a U.S. commando raid against an Iranian consulate in Iraq and the taking of five of its staff prisoner, in a blatant contravention of international law. In conjunction with this, and the fiasco of the Christmas hanging of kangaroo court tried Saddam Hussein, U.S. intelligence operatives were busy over-throwing the first remotely stable governance Somalia has known since president George H. W. Bush's disastrous "aid" mission was launched there in 1992. With these beginnings, what can we expect for the rest of 2007? Eric S. Margolis is a Canadian journalist, media commentator, and foreign affairs analyst whose work appears in Canada's Sun National Media outlets, Pakistan's Dawn, and in American Conservative Magazine. He's also a frequent commentator for the CBC, CNN, FOX, and other network news outlets in the United States and Britain and the author of the recently updated Canadian best-selling book, 'War at the Top of the World: the Struggle for Afghanistan, Kashmir, and Tibet.' Eric S. Margolis in the first segment.

And; while the Conservative government of Stephen Harper rushes to defend empire and to fill the breaches in Canada's "porous" border with billions of tax dollars, daily more Canadians left out of the nation's economic life are finding themselves living out of doors. With an estimated quarter million citizens surviving with "no fixed" at the time of Harper's ascension to Sussex, the economic policies of the Tories hold little promise for their near future prospects. Monte Paulsen is a journalist and author whose titles include: 'The Buying of the American President 2000,' and 'Beyond the Deep: The Deadly Descent into the World's Most Treacherous Cave.' Paulsen is currently a contributing editor to the Vancouver-based web news site, The Tyee. His work has also featured in newspapers and magazines from Rolling Stone to U.S. News & World Report. He also contributed to the Knight-Ridder investigative team awarded the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service while at the Grand Forks Herald. Monte Paulsen and Seven Solutions to Homelessness in the second segment.

And; Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with some of the good thing you can get up to in and around Victoria this week. But first, Eric S. Margolis and charting a perilous course in the coming year.
