Gandhi Kicks Ass!

Mickey Z.
Gandhi sez: ?Where the choice is between only violence and cowardice, I would advise violence. To take the name of non-violence when there is a sword in your heart is not only hypocritical and dishonest but cowardly ... Though violence is not lawful, when it is offered in self-defense or for the defense of the defenseless, it is an act of bravery far better than cowardly submission.?

Of course, like all quotations from user friendly icons, the above words can be easily twisted. It?s not hard to imagine Bush and Cheney using the ?violence is better than cowardice? concept to rationalize the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Even these words from the enigmatic Mahatma could be corrupted into reasoning for letting loose the dogs of war: ?Poverty is but the worst form of violence.?

But here?s another angle on the violence/non-violence debate...courtesy of George Orwell (who would have been 103 on June 25): ?People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.?

File this under ?Orwell continues to spin in his grave?: Binyamin Netanyahu, Likud party Chairman and Knesset opposition leader, sez: ?The IDF has the firepower to wipe out an entire (Palestinian) population if we want to, but we are not doing this ... If the other side had this, they would do it.?
