G8 Protesters to Blockade Nuclear Submarine Base

Faslane Coalition - YOU CAN'T END POVERTY UNLESS YOU END WAR: ?The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist. McDonalds cannot flourish without McDonnell-Douglas, the designer of the F-15, and the hidden fist that keeps the world safe for Silicon Valley?s technology is called the United States Army, Airforce, Navy and Marine Corps.?  - Thomas Friedman, New York Times, 1999

Faslane is a Royal Navy submarine base on the Clyde 30 miles (45 km) from Glasgow and 60 miles (90 km) from Gleneagles. It's the largest military base in Scotland and home port for all four British Trident nuclear armed submarines. Nuclear weapons are the ultimate expression of militarism. By blockading Faslane we're striking at a key part of the British military establishment and building on a history of highly successful and peaceful mass blockades.

This will be the biggest and most effective yet.

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE BLOCKADE FASLANE COALITION, 6/23/05

The Faslane G8 Blockade 7am, Monday 4th July 2005:

Politicians and Church Leaders to Risk Arrest in Faslane G8 Blockade

On Monday 4th July 2005, as the 'leaders' of the world gather in Scotland for the G8 summit, we will be gathering just 60 miles away at the biggest and deadliest military base in Scotland to put a spanner in the works of global militarism.

We won't just be saying a resounding 'NO' to militarism and oppression, or to wars fought on the pretext of stopping others getting WMDs. We won't just be saying no to politicians who demand others obey International Law whilst flouting it themselves. We won't only be pointing out the criminal behaviour of spending so much money on weapons while half the world starves. We won't just be highlighting the hypocrisy of talking about poverty without mentioning war.

We will be doing all these things, but we're not just going to be talking ? we're also going to be taking direct, practical, non-violent action to do something about it.

We're going to shut down the largest military base in Scotland for the day.

THE G8

The G8 is a private cabal of the leaders of the richest countries (US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Canada and Russia). They meet once a year to decide what the other international institutions (World Bank, IMF, WTO, etc.) will agree for the next year. This year, they're meeting in Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland from 6th - 8th July. While most analyses of the evils of the G8 focus on their economic power and how they abuse it, we believe it is impossible to divorce issues of war and militarism from issues of global poverty and sustainability.

In short, war creates poverty and poverty creates war. Furthermore, as military powers and members of military alliances, the G8 countries are well aware of this.

The rich countries of the world depend on their overwhelming military might to defend and extend the globalisation that allows them to exploit and oppress the poor.

The British government is saying this G8 is about Poverty and Climate Change. Yet they won't even consider that the ?48 a second that the UK alone spends on its nuclear weapons (let alone the $180 billion that the US has spent so far on the war in Iraq) could be better spent on avoiding future conflicts and providing clean water, healthcare and education around the world.
