Identity Theft: Americans Impersonating Canadians

PEJ News
- Joan Russow: Today, in a submission to the Canadian Senate Committee on the Anti-terrorism Act, a witness testified that he saw a number of individuals in Africa, wearing Canadian T-shirts, and he approached them as fellow Canadians. They responded ?Oh you are a real Canadian we are Americans but are afraid to be identified as Americans.? Rather than impersonate Canadians when traveling or working abroad perhaps the Americans that are concerned about the direction of the Bush regime should sport a different set of T-shirts. Perhaps such slogans as "Impeach Bush" etc.
Identity theft; Americans impersonating Canadians

Today, in a submission to the Canadian Senate Committee on the Anti-terrorism Act, a witness testified that he saw a number of individuals in Africa, wearing Canadian T-shirts, and he approached them as fellow Canadians. They responded Oh you are a real Canadian we are Americans but are afraid to be identified as Americans.

Rather than impersonate Canadians when traveling or working abroad perhaps American who support Bush and his regime --currently 45% --should sport T-shirts declaring the following: "Pax Americana", "Project for a new American Century", "Americans Against same sex marriage"; God Bless America" America and Armageddon" etc.. Wherever they are they should stand up proud for their Country and be willing to accept the consequences.

On the hand, the other 55% of the Americans that are concerned about the direction of the Bush regime should sport a different set of T-shirts. Perhaps such slogans as "Impeach Bush", "Condemn US pre-emptive strikes"; Re-allocate the US military budget", "Close US bases", "Send Bolton bolting", "Disinvest in the US Military" etc.

For years, Americans have been wearing Canadian insignias to disguise their identity. In the 1960's the Americans wore these insignias so as not to be designated as being "ugly Americans", boorish, or ignorant of various cultures. Canadians used to also benefit because for some reason any ugly, boorish or ignorant Canadian, devoid of Canadian insignias, used to automatically be classified as an American. Thus these Canadians contributed to the well entrenched American stereotype.

Now Americans are wearing Canadians insignias as protection --as a security measure,. If Americans are engaging in supporting militarism and corporate exploitation, destroying the environment, violating human rights, undermining culture, proselytizing fundamental Christianity they will be endangering Canadians who find these practices abhorrent.

At international meetings Canada is too often clearly perceived to be obsequiously supporting the US in the areas of corporate and trade interests. Concerned Canadians need new T-shirts as well: ?Canadians out of Afganistan?, ?End dumping of Canadian GE foods?, ?Canadians support .7% of GDP? ?Revoke licences of Canadian corporate polluters?, "end Canadian arms sales" etc.

Americans need to realize that no longer will Canadian insignas protect them from emerging international Anti-Canadianism.
