In 2010. I attended the meeting of the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT), in  New York

It is no secret that Israel has nuclear weapons. If Israel does ratify the NPT then Israel has to finally officially admit that it has nuclear weapons and Israel will be subject to inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In 2010 Israel denounced the planned meeting for a Nuclear Arms-free Middle East. Under the Non Proliferation  Treaty (NPT), the cornerstone of global disarmament efforts.

"This resolution is deeply flawed and “hypocritical," Netanyahu said during a visit to Toronto, Canada,.|”

The US adopted the resolution but with an asterisk, pointing out that the US objected to singling out Israel. Also, there had been a proposal that Israel  ratify   ]the NPT

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said Israel will not take part in a UN-led conference in 2012 designed to achieving a nuclear arms-free Middle East.

Israel denounced the planned meeting which is backed by nearly 200 nations, signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the cornerstone of global disarmament efforts.

"This resolution is deeply flawed and hypocritical," Netanyahu said during a visit to Toronto, Canada, on Saturday.|”The US  adopted the resolution but with an asterisk, pointing out that the US objected to singling out Israel.

This position is puzzling. Iran has ratified the NPT, and apparently does not have nuclear weapons but is deemed to be in violation of the NPT if it does not allow for inspection, even though it has agreed to inspection; whereas Israel which is not a signatory to the NPT  has nuclear weapons but is not deemed to be in violation of any treaty related to nuclear arms.

At the meeting there were calls of double standard

No wonder that at many of the NPT meetings there are cries of foul and double standards.

Then, in 2016, Iran adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons but  Israel joined the other nuclear weapon states along with the non-nuclear NATO states in refusing to adopt the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

In 2017, While Iran collaborated in the final drafting of the Treaty. Israel and nuclear weapon states along with the non-nuclear NATO states were ABSENT

COMMENT FROM NOAM CHOMSKY

Glad to see the article.  I think the real criminal is the US, which regularly blocks the call for a NWFZ in the ME at the NPT review conferences, most recently Obama in 2015.  The reason, I presume, is that it would require the US to admit that Israel has nuclear weapons, which would ban all aid to Israel under the Symington Amendment.  A NWFZ would end alleged concern with Iranian nuclear programs, which means that the US, including Obama, is willing to enflame the Middle East, with constant threat of major war, in order to ensure that Israel gets a huge amount of aid.  I don’t know of a single Democrat who protests.
